Overview
Ascent Academy is a gamified programming learning platform — think "Duolingo for programming," but built to go further than drills: to carry the learner from a simple exercise all the way to building real projects.
The Idea
The market has two well-served ends and an empty middle. On one side, fixation apps are fast and addictive, but nothing concrete comes out of them. On the other, algorithm challenges are technical, but detached from real work.
Ascent's bet is to bridge those worlds — taking the learner from fixation all the way to a project they can actually put in their portfolio. In a world where AI writes code and memorizing syntax loses value, what matters is knowing how to build real things, decide, debug, and integrate.
The learning journey is designed as a spectrum from the abstract to the real:
FIXATION → CHALLENGE → APPLICATION → CONSTRUCTION
Decisions So Far
A few directions that are shaping the project:
- Content is the product. The engine can be rebuilt; well-designed exercises with a finely-tuned difficulty curve are what actually take time. Content is treated as the long-term focus, not the code.
- Gamified, but not toxic. XP, ranks, and progression from the ground up — leaning into celebration and momentum rather than the punitive streak pressure common to the genre.
- Two clients, one journey. A heavier web experience for writing real code, and a lighter mobile companion for fixation and keeping the streak alive between sessions — unified by shared progress.
- Foundation before speed. Naming, structure, and identity decided up front, iterating until cohesive, rather than racing to ship.
A solo project, built and designed end-to-end. AI is used as a pair-programming companion for structure and decisions; all product direction, design, and implementation are my own.
